La leyenda cuenta que hace mucho tiempo había un dragón terrible que causaba estragos entre la población y el ganado.

Para evitar los ataques, el pueblo decidió elegir por sorteo una persona para ser devorada. Pero un día, en el sorteo salió el nombre de la hija del rey, y cuando el dragón la iba a devorar, apareció un bello caballero con armadura que se enfrentó y lo mató.

La leyenda añade que de la sangre que fluyó nació un rosal de flores rojas, el símbolo de amor y amistad…

Por eso, cada 23 de Abril, se celebra en Cataluña la Diada de Sant Jordi. En este día de los enamorados y de la amistad, los libros, las rosas y la gente tomarán, como cada año, las céntricas calles de Barcelona.

La tradición dice regalar una rosa a todas las mujeres y un libro a todos los hombres.

La Diada de Sant Jordi, also known as el día de la rosa (The Day of the Rose) or el día del llibre (The Day of the Book) is a Catalan holiday celebrated on April 23 similar to St. Valentine’s Day with some unique twists that show the ancient practice of this day.

The main event is the exchange of gifts between sweethearts, loved ones and respected ones. Historically, men gave women roses, and women gave men a book to celebrate the occasion – “a rose for love and a book forever”.

In modern times, the mutual exchange of books is customary. Roses have been associated with this day since medieval times, but the giving of books is a more recent tradition. In 1923, a bookseller started to promote the holiday as a way to honour the nearly simultaneous deaths of Miguel Cervantes and William Shakespeare on April 23, 1616. Barcelona is the publishing capital in both Catalan and Spanish and this heady one-two punch of love and literacy was quickly adopted.

On Barcelona’s most visited street, La Rambla, and all over Catalonia, thousands of stands of roses and makeshift bookstalls are hastily set up for the occasion. By the end of the day, some four million roses 800,000 books have been purchased in the name of love. You will be hard-pressed to find a woman without a rose in hand, and half of the total yearly books sales in Catalonia take place on this occasion.

The sardana, the national dance of Catalonia, will be performed throughout the day in the Placa Sant Jaume. And many books stores and cafes host readings by noted authors (look out for 24-hour marathon readings of Cervantes’ “Don Quixote”). And there will be a variety of street performers and musicians on hand to add a romantic ambience to nearly every public square and plaza.

Additionally, April 23 is one day of the year when Palau de la Generalitat, Barcelona’s principal government bulding, is open to the public. Inside this Gothic architectural masterpiece you’ll see huge displays of roses created to honour Saint George.

Catalonia hes exported this tradition of the book and the rose to the rest of the world. In 1995, the UNESCO adopted April 23 as World Book and Copyright Day.

La légende raconte qu’il y a très longtemps, il y avait dans les terres du Montblanc, un dragon terrible qui causait des ruines entre la population et le bétail.

Pour éviter les attaques, le village décida de tirer au sort une personne pour être dévorée.

Mais un jour, du tirage est sorti le nom de la filler du roi… et au moment où le dragon allait la dévorer, est apparut un beau chevalier en armure avec laquelle il fit front et tua la bête.

La légende ajout que du sang qui à coulé est né un rosier de fleurs rouges, le symbole de l’amour et de l’amitié.

Ainsi, se célèbre chaque 23 avril en Catalogne la journée de Sant Jordi. En ce jour, de l’amour et de l’amitié, les livres, les roses, et les gens s’emparent, comme chaque année, des rues de Barcelone.

La tradition dit offrir une rose à toutes les femmes et un livre à tous les hommes.

El Campeonato Europeo de Atletismo tendrá lugar en Barcelona del 26 de julio al 1 de agosto del 2010.

Más de 1500 atletas participarán en las pruebas representando a más de 50 países. Estos se celebrarán en el Estadio Olímpico Lluis Campanys de Montjuïc de Barcelona.

Este evento se realiza cada 4 años en un país diferente. Esta será la primera vez que dicha competición Europea tendrá lugar en España, un gran momento para nuestro país.

La ceremonia de inauguración de los europeos de atletismo se celebrará el lunes 26 de julio a las 21.30 en la Font Mágica de Montjuïc. El campeonato empezará con la prueba de los 20km marcha masculina, para finalizar el domingo 10 de agosto con la ceremonia de clausura y la final de relevos de 4×4000 a las 22.30h.

Además de los eventos propios del campeonato, la ciudad de Barcelona pondrá en marcha un festival con todo tipo de eventos a lo largo y ancho de la ciudad siendo en su mayoría gratuitos…

Le Championnat Européen d’Athlétisme se déroulera du 26 juillet au 1er août 2010 à Barcelone.

Plus de 1500 athlètes participeront aux épreuves, représentant plus de 50 pays. Celles-ci auront lieu dans le Stade Olympique Lluis Campanys de Montjuïc de Barcelone.

Cet évènement se déroule tous les 4 ans, et ce, chaque année dans un pays différent. Se sera la première fois qu’une telle compétition aura lieu en Espagne, un grand moment pour notre pays.

La cérémonie d’inauguration des ahtlètes européens se célèbrera le lundi 26 juillet à 21h30 à la fontaine magique du Montjuïc. Le championnat commencera avec les 20km de marche masculine, pour se finir le dimanche 10 août avec la cérémonie de clôture et la final du relais 4×4000 à 22h30.

En plus des évènements propres au championnat, la ville de Barcelone mettra en marche un festival avec tout type d’évènements en long et en largeur de la ville, et pour la plupart d’entre eux gratuits…

Cyclists will make their way into the city at approximately 5 pm, which is when the wave is scheduled to happen.

We bought the special 2-day tickets for the Barcelona Bus Touristic. One day was spent on the blue route and the other on the red. Park Guell was the sixth stop on the red route of our tour with Barcelona Bus Touristic. From the stop, we had to walk a couple of blocks up a mountain to reach the entrance of the park. Filled with beautiful flowers and architecture, the park was the ultimate tourist destination. Also situated in the park is the Gaudi museum, celebrating some of the architect’s work.

We decided that the best way to see Barcelona’s sights was to take the “hop-on hop-off” buses offered. We took the Barcelona Bus Touristic which runs 3 routes that take you all over the city. Montjuic was the 13th stop on the blue route. The bus dropped us off directly in front of the funicular station, which is a cable car that takes you to the top of the castle. For approximately 8 € a person, we took the cable car up to the castle in a matter of minutes. From there, we enjoyed beautiful views of the city and the sea. Near the castle, there is a musical water fountain that plays every night, filling the streets of Barcelona with color and music.

The airport that is closest to our office is known as El Prat Barcelona. From the airport there are several options for arriving to our office.

1. You can catch a taxi at the airport that will bring you directly to our doorstep. It will cost approximately 30€.

2. You can take the Renfe train from the airport to the city where you can transfer to a metro at either Barcelona Sants or Catalunya stations. The metro stations closest to our office are at Girona and Verdaguer.

3. The last option is a bus known as Aerobus (A1) that takes you from the Airport to Plaza Catalunya. From Plaza Catalunya, you can transfer to the metro. You can catch this bus in front of Terminal A, B, or C. The bus runs Mon-Fri from 6 am to 1 am and runs every 9 minutes. On Sat, Sun, and holidays, it leaves the airport from 6:35 am to 1 am and runs every 12 minutes. The price for the Aerobus is 3.75€.

Close to our apartment in Barcelona is El Monumental, the bull-fighting arena. We went to see a fight and experience a part of the Spanish culture. It turns out that bull-fighting is not heavily promoted in Barcelona as it is indeed a very violent sport, but it is still held for tourists’ enjoyment. Tickets vary from 23€ to over 100€ depending on how close to the arena and whether you wish to be in the shade or in the sun. Entry into the stadium and nearby museum on non-fight days is 5€.

Just a few blocks from our apartment in Barcelona is the Sagrada Familia. A beautiful church, it is one of the most famous tourist attractions in all of Barcelona. It is currently under construction, but tourists can still enter and enjoy parts of the church as well as a small museum dedicated to its architect, Gaudi. Enjoy!
